Answering One Question Will Increase Your Productivity

I was out playing soccer tournament on Saturday. Since I play in the back, I get to watch a lot of the plays develop and see some of the chances that could-have-been.

It got me thinking about how we decide to make (or not make) a productive effort – If I do “this”, will there be a positive outcome? The positive outcome doesn’t even have to relate directly to me.

For example, if we have possession of the ball and I make a run up the left side, a few things could happen:

A Take On Fred Wilson’s Take of The N+1 Theory

In a recent post, Fred Wilson explains a theory he takes great inspiration from, both from the theory itself and from it’s creator:

John had a theory he called ‘the N+1 theory’ and while he applied it destructively in his own life, I have often found great inspiration from it in mine. The N+1 Theory states that there is always one more of anything.

I like the tidiness of this theory, and think it can be expanded even further. I’ve always thought there was something or someone “more” than that/who was labeled as the tops in their field.

Making Meetings Better

I love ‘em. I love ‘em not. I love ‘em. I love ‘em…

“Them” is meetings. I do enjoy being in them – the coordination, the collaboration, the face time with departments I don’t always get to interact with on a day-to-day schedule. The go-get-’em feeling after the meeting is over. It’s all good. Until it isn’t.

When they aren’t good, I don’t like meetings. At all. I dread their arrival and gaze at the clock, watching the seconds tick away as if I was back in high school geometry. Phones beeping, presentation starting, presentation stopping, tardiness – the list can go on. It’s bad. Real bad.

Desktop Apps Are So 2002

My friend Mike and I had a quick email chat over the weekend. He suggested a new way to post entries to my blog, and thought I should give it a try.

Here was my response:

the funny thing is, i hardly use apps anymore when i’m on my laptop – if i’m on my laptop, that means i’m at home, which means i have a strong internet connection, which means i use the web (google, wordpress, etc.).

otherwise, i’m on the ipad. it’s completely changed the way i work now.

I went on about how I’d love to see a more beefy, offline-compatible iPad app for WordPress. Still, being able to jot down a few notes and turn them into a post later is a cinch while I’m traveling.

I don’t know if we’re moving away from desktop applications, but I use my laptop maybe 20% as much as I did before I picked up the iPad.

I’m just not using desktop apps as much as I used to.
